Consensus on the treatment of alopecia areata – Brazilian Society of Dermatology
2020, Anais Brasileiros de DermatologiaCitation Excerpt :Follow-up with G6PD, blood count, biochemistry, and hepatogram assessment are essential to monitor possible adverse effects. Data on the efficacy of the combination of simvastatin 40 mg/ezetimibe 10 mg, 1 ×/day in the treatment of AA are limited and controversial.74–77 Positive reports show hair regrowth rates and lower relapse in patients with recent onset and good prognosis for AA.74,75

2018, Journal of Allergy and Clinical ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :This is believed to contribute to its superiority in suppressing atherosclerosis, which can have a significant TH17 component. Initial reports on the efficacy of this treatment in patients with AA were negative32; however, the results of a more robust and controlled clinical trial are awaited (Clinical Trial no. NCT01520077). When patients receiving topical bimatoprost for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension unexpectedly reported longer and thicker lashes as a side effect,33 the hair research community quickly focused their efforts on uncovering a role for prostaglandin F2α in accelerating anagen hair growth and stimulating follicular melanocyte stem cells.34

2018, Journal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium ProceedingsCitation Excerpt :Inhibition of natural killer cell cytotoxicity is another likely mechanism (Lattouf et al., 2015; Namazi, 2004) We retrieved six articles detailing the use of statins for the treatment of AA, including two case reports (Ali and Martin, 2010; Robins, 2007), three small case series (Freitas Gouveia and Trüeb, 2017; Lattouf et al., 2015; Loi et al., 2016), and an anecdotal account (Camacho, 2017) (Table 2). The first documented case (2007) involved a 54-year-old man with AA universalis and uncontrolled hyperlipidemia who achieved significant hair regrowth 1 month after combination simvastatin/ezetimibe was initiated (Robins, 2007).
